Critical Thinking & Decolonised Curriculum: Scoring the First-Class Mark
Workshop Description
University success is no longer about memorising notes and repeating lecture slides. It is about learning how to think critically, engage with multiple perspectives, and produce work that demonstrates real academic depth.
This 2-hour interactive workshop helps South African university students bridge the gap between “passing” and achieving first-class marks by developing the critical thinking skills expected in modern higher education, including within decolonised curriculums.
Students will learn what lecturers actually mean when they say “be critical”, how to move beyond description into analysis and evaluation, and how to confidently engage with diverse academic perspectives without losing clarity or structure in their writing.
We also unpack what decolonisation in education really means in practice, and how students can respond to it in assignments, essays, and exams in a way that strengthens their arguments and improves their marks.
